Wrangel Island’s snow goose population, the only one in Eurasia, has reached a 50 year high, Wrangel Island Reserve Director Alexander Gruzdev told TASS news agency.
Prior to establishing the reserve, hunters decimated the snow goose population; it started increasing after the reserve was established
“The researchers that monitor the white goose population now estimate it at over 100,000 pairs, a new high,” Gruzdev said.
The birds owe this increase to favorable reproduction conditions over the past two years and measures to protect the species. “Prior to establishing the reserve, hunters decimated the snow goose population; it started increasing after the reserve was established,” he added.
Scientists have been monitoring the snow goose population since 1969.
